language as a model for graphic design - pun (visual)

green line

The essence of a pun is the phenomena that one symbol can have two or more meanings, or that two or more symbols can have similar or identical images but different meanings. It is the use of words in a way that suggests different meanings or plays upon similar sounds or spellings.

Puns can be visual, verbal, or a combination of both. This example is a visual pun — a photograph of a child's blocks — in the design of stationery for Ira Block Photography.
