language as a model for graphic design - hyperbole

green line

Hyperbole (hi-per´-buh-lee) is exaggeration for the sake of emphasis. Examples:
  • I've told you a million times to clean up your room.
  • I'm so tired -- I've walked about a hundred miles today.

This poster, designed during World War I, achieves hyperbole by exaggerating the image. The designer emphasized the need for books for soldiers to read by exaggerating the size of the individual books and the height of the stack carried by the soldier. One soldier would be unlikely to read or carry that many books. This exaggeration proved successful, for the campaign to solicit book donations met its objectives.
